Bakersfield City School District (BCSD), is the state's largest elementary school district with over 27,000 students enrolled. The BCSD contains 33 elementary schools, and 8 middle schools. The area's high schools are monitored by the Kern County High School District, which is also the largest in the state, with over 35,000 students in 22 schools.
In 1965, a university in the California State University system was founded in Bakersfield. California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) has approximately 7,800 students. Bakersfield is also only a 2 hour drive from the University of Southern California (USC), and The University of California Los Angelas (UCLA), and California State University, all located in the Los Angelas area.
