The Kern County Museum, located on Chester Avenue just north of downtown Bakersfield, is full of interesting exibits with a large collection of regional artifacts. Permanent exhibits include: "Black Gold: The Oil Experience", a hands-on modern approach at displaying how oil is mined; and "The Lori Brock Children's Discovery Museum", a hands-on children's museum and a display on the influential "Bakersfield Sound" style of country music, which of course rivaled the "Nashville Sound".
Football is a very popular sport in Bakersfield. The Bakersfield High School team has won more total games, sections, and state titles than any other California school. The Bakersfield College (a junior college) team has won four national championships.
The Bakersfield Speedway is home to Saturday night, open-wheeled modified racing, and currently is constructing a NASCAR approved track, in hopes of attracting bigger events in the future.
